"DEAL MACHINE" is my new virtual band.

I recently got married and moved out to the suburbs, after living in cities (Washington DC, San Francisco and then Los Angeles) for over 20 years. I built a little recording studio and started podcasting with my wife, Debra Jean Dean. We are having a blast.

But she has a 9-5 job and I work at home, and am currently between projects, but collecting royalties on previous projects. SO....since I have a LOT of time on my hands, I started playing music again. I haven't touched a bass or sang in three years. I've haven't played bass or sang regularly for THIRTEEN years, since my band, BOMB, broke up.

I decided to start by doing covers of music by other people. Great songs that I love, and bring my own touch to. I started with covers because it's easy…sort of "training wheels" for falling back on the bicycle. Playing bass was physically hard at first, and I wanted to get my hands back in shape. I also couldn't sing as strongly as I used to. And I was getting used to my new recording gear. I've been in a lot of studios before, but they never let me near the knobs, so I went out and bought my own knobs. And some great microphones, and a good mixer. And we dumpster dived carpet to cover the walls and ceiling, and I was in business.

So I was getting used to playing and singing again, and learning to record, and wanted to get that all solid before writing songs again….That will come in time.

On my computer, I can play drums, I am getting a keyboard, I have a bass (my wife's son's bass that was in a closet collecting dust with no strings on it) and can sing. But I don't have a guitar, and I'm not a great guitarist. But I know a lot of great guitarists. Most of them are like me: old punk rockers who still love music, have recording gear, but hate bands, hate dealing with bands, and just wanna rock. And collaborating over the Internet is the best way to do that. So I'm outsourcing the guitar playing to friends of mine, across the country and across the globe.

I was working on my first cover, "Hey Man Nice Shot" the day I found out my daughter Amelia Worth died of Leukemia (November 7, 2006 ). Instead of laying in bed and crying for a week, which was my first instinct, I got up, walked into the next room (my studio), and did the vocals at four in the morning. They were all one take, and are filled with a lot of spent emotion.

I e-mailed the rough song file to my dear friend of many years, Charlie Kramer (Mr. Anus from "The Happy Flowers.") He recorded tracks in his Washington DC home studio, sent them back, I mixed it, and DEAL MACHINE was born.

Over the next few days, I collaborated on a number of songs with several different friends, including Skip Lunch (another great guy I've known for 20 years, who now lives in China), and am loving it.

It's all the fun of playing music without any of the bullshit, ego, driving, begging for gigs, lifting gear, dealing with evil promoters and putting up with late/flaky/immature band members.
